Under the New Regional Policy (NRP), the Federal Government and the cantons are aiming to increase competitiveness and value creation in peripheral and rural areas, as well as mountain regions. The NRP aims to balance out unwanted regional differences with regard to economic development and so help to bring the country together as one. Initiatives, programmes and infrastructure projects support this structural transformation and the digitalisation of the individual regions. Around 80 percent of the non-repayable federal funding available is used to finance tourism projects and develop innovation capabilities within industry by means of “regional innovation systems” (RIS).
